4 Versions of "Get Your Baby"
East L.A. Classic Instrumental
"Get Your Baby"- Four
versions of the East L.A. garage rock classic song written by members of the
Mixtures from Ventura, an Eddie Davis managed band. The Blendells, Mark &
the Escorts, the Premiers, and Cannibal & the Headhunters all recorded versions. To the best of my knowledge
all four versions were recorded in the period of 1964-66. I know my band
(Mark & the Escorts) recorded it in March of 1965. I believe the Blendells
did it previously and the Premiers and Cannibal & the Headhunters recorded it
after us. The Premiers recorded it in 1966 according to the liner notes of
the Varese Sarabande compilation on which their version was included. I'm
playing lead guitar on the Mark & the Escorts version, Lawrence Perez on the
Premiers', and Rudy Valona on the Blendells'. I don't know who played lead
guitar on the Cannibal & the Headhunters version. According to Andy
Tesso, guitarist for the Romancers and the Mixtures in the 60s, he played lead
on the original version by the Mixtures. However, that version for some
reason was never released and no one seems to know where the master is. I
certainly would like to hear it. It's interesting to listen to all of the
versions side
by side to hear the similarities and differences. Check 'em out on the links below:

Benefit for Norton Records- On Saturday, April 13, 2013, my teenage band of the 1960s, Mark & the Escorts,
reunited to benefit Norton Records who suffered losses in the aftermath of
Hurricane Sandy back East. The benefit concert took place at The Echo
nightclub on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles, in the Echo Park
district. Legendary East L.A. band, Thee Midniters, also were part of the
lineup. With Mark & the Escorts, that made two East L.A. "Eastside Sound"
bands of the 60s on the bill, which included twelve other bands. The show went from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The venue was
packed with hundreds of people, who were totally into the music. I was
pleased that the mostly young, white audience showed great appreciation and
reacted enthusiastically to my band, as well as Thee Midniters.
